| El Syd is one of the revered 364 original Herreshoff 12 ½ footers. Originally designed by Nat Herreshoff in 1914 as a training boat for young sailors in Buzzards Bay, the 12 ½ is probably the most beloved small boat of all time. The profile of the boat is about as familiar to sailors as the Mona Lisa's smile. The boat can comfortably seat four adults, yet is fun to sail single-handed. Due to its heavy lead keel, it has the feel of a much larger craft, and is stable in gusty conditions. You don't get drenched in a chop, and it will keep moving in the mere suggestion of a breeze El Syd is missing her original builder’s plate, but we have researched her history and know she is hull #1065, built in 1928. She has oak frames, cedar planking, oak trim, and a gaff rig, and is equipped with a 2002 Triad trailer. |
