A cedar strip boat is first designed on computer, taking into account a variety of factors, producing something perfectly attuned to its desired function.
We follow the plans by cutting out forms, cross sections of the boat, and attach them to a custom designed construction workbench. The combined forms create a mold, around which we build a wooden boat out of the strongest wood for its weight. After the whole boat is completed, it only weighs 55 pounds.
The parts are cut from cedar planks, and each one must be lengthened to reach the boat's full length and pushed through a router to interlock with the next strip.
They are glued together using an elaborate clamping method to avoid using nails, and sanded to produce a smooth hull.
For this boat, I carved in a 1/32" groove on the sides and deck to fit in an inlay design.
Then we cover the whole thing with fiberglass, a cloth which goes on white and dries clear after epoxy is painted through. It needs three coats to go smooth.
Inside and out.
Then 3-4 coats of spar varnish to keep the sun from damaging the beautiful finish.
The rim around the cockpit is made out of 48 interlocking pieces of wood, to match the maple stems which had to be steam bent to match the boat's gorgeous curves. The inside and outside stems are shaped by hand with a block plane.
I spent at least 150 hours building it. The materials normally go for 1,800, here you have the whole thing at my cost minus labor. The job is near perfect. These boats sell for up to 6,500 but to tell you the truth, mine is worth 3,000. The price is insane. I'm selling it new for less than a plastic one. I'm sorry, you've got to arrange the shipping. I can only give so much.
The boat is designed mostly for flatwater and lakes, but don't be scared to take it down a river. The monocoque (fiberglass inside and outside) design makes it strong enough to handle rocks, with an impact strength of over 350 lbs per square foot. And if you scratch it up, just redo the varnish.
Just when the summer comes around, you have the choice of a boat to purchase, and at the same price as any other boat you can get a work of art.
There's my boat. And I'm practically giving it away for free.
