Further Comments
For extreme reliability, this 1934 16 foot Gar Wood Speedster Replica uses a modern Mazda Marine Rotary Engine. With this lightweight, 175 hp engine and advanced construction techniques this boat goes faster, looks better longer, and is much more fun than even thinking about owning an original (if you can find it). Mazda wankel rotary engines have been perfected over the years and are extremely reliable these days -- rated for 2000 hours before rebuilding in a marine environment. The engine also has closed cooling also known as "fresh water cooling". That means automotive type "anti-freeze" is utilized in the engine block itself, meaning the block does not have to be drained for cold weather...just the two heat exchangers and the exhaust manifold.Just completed, this boat debuted at the Charlotte, NC antique boat show in Sept. 2006. The engine has less than 5 hours on it. It has a foot throttle for better control.
The mahogany is faired and sanded extremely smooth with 12 coats varnish. All planks and most of all of the other wood pieces are accurately computer cut on my CNC router.
This boat utilizes an all fiberglass inner hull that was made by taking a mold off an original Gar Wood Speedster. The 1/4" thick mahogany planking is attached to the outside of the fiberglass hull, but above the waterline only. There is no wood on the bottom. The hull has a 1/4" lip that the planks lay next to that allows a perfectly smooth transition to the painted bottom.
This makes for a very rigid hull that can take a modern, more powerful engine and will not flex or distort with use and obviously requires no "soak-up". In fact, the mahogany stays nicer looking much much longer than an all-wood boat because it is not load bearing. The inner fiberglass hull carries the load.
A brand new custom fit galvanized trailer is also included (the white trailer pictured is NOT the included trailer a new galvanized one is. For more construction photos and videos, please refer to the links at the end of this listing.
A front flagpole with burgee and rear stern pole with light and flag are also included.
We invite and encourage prospective buyers to inspect this boat personally before purchase.
