Further Comments

The asking price has been reduced from $235,000 to "make us an offer." We're ready to price this boat to sell this summer, and encourage you to make an offer.

This extraordinary 1931 Matthews 38' double cabin cruiser is ready for summer getaways, and sleeps six. The elegant Dowager is structurally better than new thanks to a 2001 restoration by master boatwrights at Cayuga Wooden Boatworks in Ithaca, NY.   Dowager’s interior was restored to its original art deco charm, new systems installed, and the hull was rebuilt from the deck down. The result is a 1931 show boat that looks like it was caught in a time capsule, with modern systems and a safe, strong hull for confident cruising.

Dowager’s 1999 - 2001 rebuild/restoration:

  • 132 white oak ribs (all)

  • keel

  • shaft log

  • horn timber

  • stem

  • knee

  • stringers

  • engine beds

  • covering boards

  • transom

  • all planks below waterline

  • some topside planks

  • cedar tongue & groove forward deck planking

  • painted canvas deck covering

  • Silicon bronze fasteners were used throughout

All Dowager’s systems are new as of 2002:

  • engine controls

  • electrical panels

  • shore power

  • wiring

  • plumbing

  • heads

  • tanks

  • shower

  • refrigeration

  • propane

  • The 100 hp 1988 Westerbeke diesel engine was cleaned and reinstalled on shock absorbing mounts on new engine beds.

The restoration mission was to make the Dowager safe and comfortable with modern amenities but keep it as original as possible. The boat's insured replacement value is $600,000 due to the scope and quality of the restoration.

Dowager has original beveled mirrors and bronze hardware. There are cleverly hidden modernizations like the SeaFrost refrigeration system adapted to the original icebox. The shower in the forward head has hot and cold water pressure.

Dowager’s hull is extremely fair and true to its lines with no hogging, deformation, loose or proud planking. The interior is in showroom condition with doors and trim well varnished and all other surfaces painted white. There is no cracking or peeling paint. The boat is kept undercover in a boathouse year round, preserving its impeccable condition. This vessel has been meticulously and professionally maintained since its 2001 restoration. Summer of 2016 maintenance included annual bottom paint and varnish (including transom).

This boat is for the discerning buyer who wants to own a classic wooden yacht that's been restored to its fullest potential. The Dowager is ready for extended cruising, elegant parties, and charmed days summer. Contact to make an offer.
