Further Comments

I am a traditional rigger and shipwright by trade and built the rigging myself. I later employed Cadhead Square Rigging and Yacht Design, Naval Architects in Enkhuizen, who conducted inclination tests and created a stablility booklet. I then put on a steel tapered keel, following their recommendation of 4 tonnes of ballast, but I added an additional 1.5 tonne, making a total 5.5 tonnes in the keel, making her a very stable vessel. The testing they conducted shows that 'Fiddler's Green' passes criteria required to meet the Rules and Regulations of Sea Going Vessels NL, sailing area: Worldwide. When designing the rig I decided smaller sails would enable greater ease of handling, and allow the vessel to be reefed down heavily when needed, but still remain well balanced. Her eleven sails allow her to be balanced at most points of sail. As much as one doesn't like to be caught in uncomfortable weather and seas, 'Fiddler's Green' has weathered numerous squalls, storms and adverse weather includig a force 12 off the Portuguese coast. Having proven herself in weather like this I am more concerned about the safety of the crew than the ship abilities!
